The Annual Downtown Jazz Festival and Blues Concert are bringing a fresh batch of spice and soul to Gainesville. The music begins Friday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. with the Downtown Blues Concert, featuring three exciting performers. Gainesville’s own Used Blues band will jump-start the festival weekend beginning at 7 p.m. JW Gilmore and the Blues Authority will follow at 8 p.m., followed by nationally acclaimed blues artist Eddie Kirkland.
On Saturday evening, the music continues as the 5th Annual Downtown Jazz Festival introduces world-renowned artists to the local music scene. At 6 p.m., Billboard World Music Award nominee, Ginetta’s Vendetta, will take the stage. The NYC trumpet-led trio of musicians features Ginetta, a triple threat dynamo who plays, sings and composes. She creates a spontaneous combustion of soul as she belts sultry vocals and plays fiery jazz on her pocket trumpet. Gainesville’s most talented smooth jazz band, Gruv Therapy will follow at 7:30 p.m. Gruv Therapy will have everyone jamming to its funky, neo-soul, jazz grooves.
At 9 p.m., jazz flautist Bradley Leighton will take the stage. A funky fusion of styles will be ignited as Leighton introduces his partner for the night, Jason Miles, a Grammy award winning contemporary jazz artist. “He [Miles] is an extra special treat for the festival attendees,” said John Starr, General Manager of WXJZ Smooth Jazz 100.9. Miles has worked with legendary artists including Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson and Miles Davis, among others. Leighton, a Best Jazz Album nominee, is a classically trained musician who believes in the funkier, fun side of music. Let Leighton and Miles take you on a musical journey as you enjoy the smooth sounds of jazz and Leighton’s alto flute. These musical treats are absolutely free and open to the public.
The 5th Annual Downtown Jazz Festival is produced by the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs in cooperation with Smooth Jazz 100.9. It is an integral part of the award-winning Downtown Festival & Art Show, North Florida’s premier fall festival of the arts, ranked No. 28 out of more than 10,000 art and craft shows in the country by Sunshine Artist Magazine. For more than two decades, the festival has provided visitors with a tradition of excellence in art, music, and fun. Whether it’s a fun-filled day of shopping or a quiet evening of music under the stars, the festival never disappoints. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to support today’s up-and-comers and tomorrow’s legends.
